Pirogue ride in Ganvié

Three hours in the water lanes of the lake city, with a boatman who lives there.

  • Ganvié, Benin
  • 3 h
  • 2 to 6 people

Departure from the Abomey-Calavi pier. The crossing to Ganvié takes about twenty minutes — enough time to watch the first stilt houses appear and take in the sheer size of the lake.

Once there, the pirogue slips into the lanes between the houses. You pass the school, the church, the shops, the fish pens. The boatman explains what you see, because he lives here.

A stop at the floating market, where trade happens from one pirogue to the next. Then the return leg follows a different route, past the acadjas.
