Dawn pirogue — floating market

Departure before sunrise, as the market sets up and before any visitors arrive.

  • Ganvié, Benin
  • 2 h 30
  • 2 to 6 people

Ganvié's floating market happens early. The vendors arrive by pirogue, moor side by side, and trade passes from one boat to the next. By seven, most of it is already over.

This trip leaves before dawn to arrive as the market takes shape. The light is low, the lake is still, and there is not a tourist in sight.

The return goes through the housing lanes, just as the children set off for school — by pirogue, too.

Hour by hour

Indicative times, adjusted on the day to the weather and the group.

  1. 5 h 30

    Boarding in the dark

Coffee or tea at the quay, then departure into the night. The lake is black and perfectly still.

Light comes fast at these latitudes. The silhouettes of the houses sharpen within minutes.

  3. 6 h 40

The vendors arrive and moor to one another. It is the most alive moment of the day — and it does not last.

  4. 7 h 30

Return through the housing lanes as the children leave for school — by pirogue, too.
